Health Risks of Over the Counter Drugs
The maker of Tylenol graciously made plans to lower the maximum dose of Extra Tylenol due to the high potential for overdose and bodily harm the chemical acetaminophen in the way of liver disease. Johnson and Johnson the drug maker has “concerns about potential liver damage and overdoses.”
Well evidently concerns about potential liver damage don’t really describe Tylenol as the leading cause of liver failure and tens of thousands overdose on the drug each year. Literally thousands of people have died from the toxic effects of acetaminophen throughout the years with untold damage to people diagnosed with liver failure requiring transplants or decades of dialysis treatment.
Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver and if continual abuse will cause severe liver injury possibly culminating into drug induced hepatitis. There are well over 2,000 cases of acute liver failure each year with 50% coming from acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is considered one of the least harmful drugs known to man to the degree it is sold over the counter to anyone.
This is not new information between 1990- 2001 26,000 people were hospitalized and an average of 450 people each year from acetaminophen overdose. Johnson and Johnson have some concerns there may be potential for damage caused by the chemical might be downplaying it just a little. Recommended daily doses are being cut from 4,000 milligrams to 3,000 milligrams or six 500 milligram pills.
Health experts continue to be concerned with overdoses from other drug considered less harmful containing ibuprofen like Advil and Motrin, the cold medicine Theraflu and Benadryl. Ibuprofen causes gastrointestinal problems and kidney damage. Mild side effects of ibuprofen are – Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; headache; heartburn; nausea; stomach pain or upset and weakness.
Severe side effects range severe allergic reactions like a rash or hives, itching, trouble breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue to vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest pain, confusion and depression just to name a few.
Many physicians and health officials warn the public that all drugs have negative effects, although some do have benefits that outweigh negative effects; drugs are toxic and have toxic effects on the body. Any time you altar normal bodily function with chemicals there are other adverse reactions.
Additionally, in the effort of the body to absorb the toxin tremendous amounts of nutrients are burnt up, nutrients needed for other bodily functions. All of these negative effects reduce the ability of the body to function normally, weakens the immune system and increases the possibility of further drug abuse or turning to more of the same or harder drugs to alleviate these newly created symptoms.
